Michigan Court Rules Guide

Overview

Michigan state courts operate under the Michigan Court Rules (MCR), promulgated by the Michigan Supreme Court. The MCR governs all practice in Michigan's Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, Circuit Courts, and District Courts. Michigan uses a unified court system with clear distinctions between civil, criminal, and family proceedings.

Important: Michigan's answer deadline is 21 days for personal service in Michigan — not 30 days as in many other states. Parties served outside Michigan or by mail receive 28 days. This distinction is critical for default judgment risk management.
