North Carolina Court Rules Guide

Overview

North Carolina state courts operate under the North Carolina Rules of Civil Procedure (N.C. R. Civ. P.), North Carolina Rules of Appellate Procedure (N.C. R. App. P.), and General Rules of Practice for Superior and District Courts. North Carolina's General Court of Justice consists of Superior Courts, District Courts, and the appellate division.

Important: N.C. R. Civ. P. Rule 6(a) mirrors federal FRCP Rule 6: when a period is 7 days or less, intermediate Saturdays, Sundays, and legal holidays are excluded from counting. This creates a critical distinction for short-period deadlines.
