Ohio Court Rules Guide

Overview

Ohio state courts operate under the Ohio Rules of Civil Procedure (Ohio R.Civ.P.), Ohio Rules of Appellate Procedure (Ohio R.App.P.), and county-level local rules. Ohio has 88 county Courts of Common Pleas as the primary trial courts, with 12 appellate districts and the Ohio Supreme Court as the final court of appeal.

Important: Ohio's answer deadline is 28 days — not the 30-day standard in many states. Additionally, Ohio R.Civ.P. 6(A) has a special rule: when a period is less than 7 days, intermediate Saturdays, Sundays, and legal holidays are excluded from the count.
